South Korea was a fairly weak country. It developed its own administration with the help of the United States. The North and South administrations clashed each other from their very cores of doctrines, since the North persisted a communist government under the influence of Stalin, while the South wanted a liberal, democratic state. By 1948, the South had already elected Syng-Man Rhee as the president of the assembly, and the North separately declared Kim Il-Sung as its leader.
In 1950, the North invaded South Korea when South Korea was at its worst economic state with weak military forces. It was an attempt to reunify the two Koreas into a communist nation under the leadership of Kim Il-Sung. The North's invasion of the South marked the beginning of the Korean War, which lasted three dreadful years. The North was supported by the People's Party of China and the Soviet Union, while the South was backed with the U.N. forces led by the United States. The United States strongly opposed the communist expansion. When the war ended, South Korea remained a democratic country , maintaining close ties with one of the major democratic powers, the United States.

My opinion on the role of South Korea in the Korean War is that they were such a fragile country. If they were never supported by the U.S. and NSC, they would have never won the war. South Korea would have easily been forced into a communist country by North Korea. They weren't a fighting country and were shocked when they were attacked by the North when the Korean War was established. Sung-man Rhee was a kinder president who didn't approve of war, so the battle wasn't something he could prevail in on his own.
