The initial goals of the Korean war was to protect South Korea from invasion and takeover by North Korea and to stop the spread of communism in Asia.
The goals were met, sort of. Although South Korea remained intact, there was never a formal peace signed, just a cease fire.
North Korea's goal was to unite the Korean Peninsula under the rule of the Korean Communist Party. South Korea was fighting for the survival and guarantee of its weak and small democratic society. Communist China got involved with UN forces to keep North Korea intact as a communist nation. The United States had pushed the invaders back across the 38th parallel. In doing this, the US was planning to halt the spread of communism in Asia, and later on eliminate it completely. The Soviet Union didn't play much of a significant role in the Korean War, but it did supply advisers and equipment to the North Koreans. Their purpose was most likely to watch out for the US doctrine and pray for a weakening of the US in any way possible, such as; militarily, politically and economically.

I believe their reason for fighting were justified, and South Korea might of had the upper-hand considering so many nations were on their side fighting against enemies together. South Korea just wanted to step away from the communist ways of North Korea. The Soviet Union was helping North Korea to continue the communism while the United States was trying to terminate it. They were good allies.
