On June 25, 1950 the North Korean army attacked South Korea, crossing the 38th Parallel. The majority of ROK forces were routed by North Korean troops. The North Korean invaders hoped to take Seoul, the South Korean capital, as quickly as possible. This started the Korean War. Their intentions were to capture South Korea and turn it into a communist country while taking over the area. The Democratic People's Republic of Korea was declared in the north, with Kim Il-sung established as Premier (with support of the USSR).
North Korea was under the rule of Japan. They were forced into communism by the Japanese government, and as a result they wanted South Korea to do the same. South Korea wasn't so willing, so their surprise attack on them was hoping to scare them into it, while starting a civil war. They needed to control the land crossing the 38th Parallel, which separated them. After their attack though, countries around the world were getting involved, such as the U.S and China. Seeing all the advantages North Korea had over South Korea only made South Korea seem so weak. Countries like the United States intervened to support the South in their fight.
The war in Korea subsequently bogged down into a bloody stalemate. In 1953, the United States and North Korea signed a cease-fire that ended the conflict. The cease-fire agreement also resulted in the continued division of North and South Korea at just about the same geographical point as before the conflict. North Korea continued to remain a communist country separated from the world.

My opinion on North Korea's role in the Korean war so that they were only out for themselves. Under the rule of Japan, they became such a self-centered country that only wanted the other nations to follow by example. Forcing the South into battle due to their determination of controlling them wasn't a good thing to do. If they believed communism was the right form of government, they should have left their nation alone, separated from the rest of the world, so their could be as close to peace as possible.
